PRODUCTION & DESIGN

This all purpose kit with rustic accents and lining is meant to be passed on to future generations.

Waxed canvas is an ancient material, one of the oldest, in fact, and is still in use nowadays. It really is exemplary of a material that is tried, tested and true over time. Originating in Scotland in the 1850's waxed canvas was created for and by seafarers and mariners, by rubbing linseed oil into the cloth. This resulted in an incredibly durable fabric that repelled water, a popular choice for the sails and clothing of the sailors who ruled the waves. Being lightweight and durable, waxed canvas became the clothing of choice for the British Navy, Army and Air force during the Second World War, an attribute no other military possessed at that time.

Fast forward to today, and the wax is no longer rubbed onto the canvas. Instead the canvas is made with the oil embedded into the fibers, which allows the material to grow old with style and grace. The use of the fabric is now world wide, and is becoming more fashionable rather than sporty, all the while retaining its rugged personality.

Our canvas comes from the highly respected supplier Lonas Segovia, the oldest canvas maker in Guatemala. The seams are sewn using bonded nylon thread with a burned and melted finish offering no loose ends during your travel.

Denim wouldn't be an iconic material if it didn't have its complex history. When we hear Denim we immediately think of Jeans, which originated in Italy, more specifically the town of Genoa, Italy. As far back as the early 16th century, the fabric was designed and created for the town's Navy, who required all-purpose pants for their sailors who would work endlessly, come rain or shine. Genoa, or "Gênes" in french (which is where the word Jeans derives from) sold the fabric from their port, while the raw material was provided from Nîmes, and thus, over the years, "de Nîmes" slowly became "Denim".

The heavy-duty zipper is made by Japanese-founded and Brooklyn-based YKK, a zipper and hardware manufacturer widely respected in the worlds of fashion and accessories. The bottom features a heavier, double-layer overlay with double-stitched seams offering long lasting support. Seams are sewn using bonded nylon thread with a burned and melted finish offering no loose ends during your travel.

The term 'Dopp Kit' is derived from its inventor, Charles Doppelt, a leather artisan who immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. The toiletry bag became relevant after Doppelt's kits were issued to millions of American military recruits during the Second World War. After the war, these roomy grooming cases continued to find favor among soldiers and civilian men and women alike.

Worth It

I have a thing for Hide & Drink now. I got a passport holder a few years back and loved it. Then I bought this utility bag for myself to hold a bunch of stuff while traveling. Now I just purchased 4 more of this same bag & 4 passport wallets for all of my groomsmen. I highly recommend these bags. Absolutely no reason to not get it, definitely worth the price, ships quickly and is durable.
