Silly Names - Serious Leather

Hide & Drink is a vertically integrated community driven brand dedicated to support the local community in La Antigua, Guatemala. Our product is designed, sourced, and manufactured by local artisans for the benefit of local residents.  Our wages are fair and we emphasize for-profit development through entrepreneurial education. In addition to creating jobs through the manufacturing and sale of our products, we contribute 5% of our Gross Profits to an outstanding organization: Niños de Guatemala (NDG).

NDG is a Dutch-Guatemalan nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala by providing quality education to those who need it most. Since founding in 2006, NDG has opened two primary schools, Nuestro Futuro and El Porvenir, which now serve more than three hundred Guatemalan children from low-income families in the towns of Ciudad Vieja and San Lorenzo de Cubo.

More About Ñinos de Guatemala

Development through Education

At NDG, we believe that education is the key to development not just for our students but also their families and communities. Our primary schools go beyond teaching reading, writing, and basic mathematics. NDG’s aim is to develop a generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who will drive social change in Guatemala by fostering students’ critical thinking and inspiring their creativity.

Project Sustainability

Within five years of launching a school, our team in Guatemala must be able to raise 100% of its operational costs. This method reduces our projects’ dependence on foreign support and ensures their longevity. To help with this goal, we’ve opened two social businesses in Antigua, Cambio Spanish School and The Experience Guatemala Tour, which reinvest all of their profits in NDG.

In 2014, NDG was given the Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Foundation’s Sustainability Award and a grant of Q250,000 in recognition of our financial model.

Partnership with the Local Community

NDG has always felt that our programs belong to those they serve. Our projects are directed and run by Guatemalan staff, which helps to create jobs and foster a sense of local ownership. Each school is responsible for developing its own curriculum and afterschool programs as well as managing its finances. NDG’s role is to provide training, monitoring and evaluation.
